A thought or two on the power of thoughts
I seem to spend a lot of time telling you to dig into your memories and your thought processes. Having just re-read several weeks worth of the Daily Dose, recurring themes come forward and thoughts seem to have been a dominant part. Why are your thoughts so important that I would spend so much time on them?
Well the thoughts that you currently have running through your mind are the key to your future.
If you focus on stuff that's already happened you will keep on re-living the same kinds of problems that you have already encountered. Of course you can remember the good stuff too, but i can almost guarantee that you spend more time thinking about the bad rather than the good. Go on you know i'm right.
You can also project into the future, where - dreams of knights on white chargers come to drag you out of the mess you may be in. Dreams of finding a tall, dark handsome man, dreams of winning the lottery. Day dreams can be fun, but they're not really productive though are they?
Or you can think about what your future might be like - based on the kind of work and effort that you are willing to put into it. It's no good trying to imagine a thinner, healthier you if you spend all your time eating donuts, drinking iced coffee with double cream and ice cream is it?
So, the first process in getting more out of your life is to imagine it. But now I want you to do something quite radical. I want you to get out a notebook and write it down. What can you see, what can you hear, what can you touch, are there any smells associated with your thoughts.
Then I want you to start adding some detail to those thoughts. For example - What size house do you want. Do you have any pictures you can find and cut out and stick into the book? How many floors, what sort of curtains do you have? Do you have a well tended garden or do you need to factor in a gardener? Do you know what area you want to live in? Describe it, do you walk to work, catch the train, cycle, or drive your car? Do you work from home - where? Describe your office, describe the chair you are sitting in. Does the chair squeak when you lean back? Do you have a cat rubbing against your ankles, is the air filled with the smell of fresh flowers, can you see next doors washing on the line? Go on these are your thoughts, get involved in the process of creating your future, after all that's where you are going to be living.
What are you willing to do today to make those images come alive for you?
Have you spoken to the bank about the kind of loan you can afford, can you pay cash? Have you visited the area you want to live in? Have you "driven home" just so you can experience the feel of it?
There is another technique that can help you - especially if you are stuck. you know you want to open a shop, but you're not sure about the immediate steps. So work backwards. What does the store look like, where is it, what do you sell, where did the stock come from, do you have a sign above the door, what does it say? Do you have a business name registered, and a business number? Do you know what sort of grants you may be entitled to? Tax breaks? Imagine walking through the door on the day of opening and greeting your customers - those ones you mailed and invited to come to the launch party.
Thoughts are important, yet we fill our minds with the detrius of yesterday - if you do that, then how are you going to find time to work on that business proposal, write that final paper for your course, write the book, deliver those training sessions, work hard on your job so you can achieve those wonderful images that you now have to focus on. Because once you know what it is you really want, you will achieve it.
With many thoughts
Elle
