Appreciate the small things

If you constantly overlook the little things, will you notice the big things even if you run full tilt into them? And more importantly will you truly appreciate them if you have forgotten how to appreciate those smaller things that fill our days.

What do I mean? Well in this ever increasing fast paced world in which we live, we can forget to say thank you, we can forget to smile, we can forget to reach out to another person who needs a hug. We are so focussed on where we want to go and what WE want to do that we forget that sometimes the flowers have been waiting for us all day to stop and admire them.

Can you imagine getting to the end of your journey - and say - hey I'm ready to smell the roses now, C'mon, where are you? And you look around and discover that in your rush and haste, you trampled those roses on the way....how would you feel?

Those flowers are the important things, the friends you never made time for, the phone calls you never made, the letters you never wrote, the books you never read, the sunsets you never got around to watching. You were so focussed on your "goal" achievement, that you forgot life was really about living whilst you achieved those other things you said you wanted. Yes it is important to set goals, it is even more important to achieve them. But the most important aspect of life is actually living today. Not drowning in the sorrow of yesterday, or living an imaginary future - but here, now, today. Do all that you can today, and that means taking time out to appreciate the little things in life, because it would be sad to get to the point where you reach your goal and have nothing and no-one to share it with - don't you think?

Take a large Jam Jar, some large stones, some small pebbles, some sand, some water and a pinch of salt.
If you put everything in but the large stones you don't get them in.
NOW the stones are the big bits, the important parts of your life. You decide which bits are important or not. SO the flowers may be a stone, goals may be a pebble.Appreciation of flowers may become a goal.Only you can decide. If you want something in your life get it in before it is pushed out by the pebbles sand and water - oh yes and the pinch of salt - you can only get that out when all the water has evaporated then who cares.
