Days that are well planned are only half the battle

interesting word isn't it battle, and sometimes it feels like we are waging war on ourselves and our circumstances. Well sometimes it's necessary.

Take technology for instance. The computers, the pagers, the faxes, the telephones, the landlines as well as the mobiles. We are more connected now than we ever were. This morning I was thinking about a television programme out of the UK called the missing postman - don;t know if you ever saw it, but basically the postie on his peddle bike, was told he was being made redundant - technology you see, so he decides to take the contents of the last post box and hand deliver the contents. Brilliant series, if you ever get the chance to watch it.

But technology has made us both productive and lazy - sounds like a misnomer doesn't it? Well it is and it isn't.

My home computer is third hand, my laptop second hand. I'm loath to throw things away and would sooner recycle something than chuck away a perfectly good - well anything. But with technology and computers in particular it is important to check to see if your recycling isn't costing you time and money.

I'm fortunate, the laptop I use was state of the art when it was bought, so it's still better than most of the laptops on the market today, but the home computer - well that's a different story - which is why the kids use it. Because I was wasting so much time, re-booting, waiting for programmes to load. Waiting, waiting, waiting, that someone finally took pity on me and gave me their old one that was gathering dust on the floor of their office.

One of the tech guys told me today that a mere 15 minutes of down time each and every day can amount to a brand new computer - your time multiplied by your hourly rate multiplied by physical time = a brand new computer every few months (or less depending on your normal hourly charge out rate)....in other words it will more than pay for itself over it's natural lifespan.

So if you have poor technology, and your day is not well planned to cope with the down time, then please consider that you are wasting your time by not replacing it, by thinking that you are being economical...you're not.

Unless you can multi task effectively whilst your computer is loading, and whilst you are waiting, please consider buying some new hardware....you will achieve far more each day, and you get the added bonus of not being completely stressed out whilst you are waiting.

With many thoughts

Elle
