Drifting along or paddling?
Today is the last day of the working week. I know you know that. But my question for you as you head into the weekend is this:
Have you drifted along, going with the tides of life, trying to avoid and negotiate the whirlpools and the rocks as they appear. Or did you plan your journey on the river of life, so that you could negotiate the bends and rapids with east?
As you will have gathered by now, I am great believer in planning the day / week / weekend as much as I possibly can. I know what needs to be done, by when and roughly how long it is going to take me to achieve each item. That gives me the framework around which the rest of the unexpected hiccups can be placed.
Which means I don't drift through each day, get to the other end, tired and have no idea why or what i have achieved as a result of expending energy for approximately 16 waking hours.
Now that doesn't mean I plan to the nth degree, because I love doing the outrageous, spur of the moment things. But because I have planned most of my day / week / weekend it does allow me to know whether I can have a couple of hours to go and visit a museum, or write a chapter of my novel. Without the kind of planning to structure my day I would feel guilty about doing those sorts of things otherwise.
Some would call it work/life balance. Some would call it common sense. I don't care what you call it. It just makes sense to do it.
If you want to get more out of every day, then surely it makes sense to have some kind of plan.
But once you have set your plan, ask yourself - is this the best use of my time? Will these tasks I have set for myself take me towards my ultimate goal(s) or not? And if your day is filled with mundane, boring, routine, then I do have to ask - are you serious about this goal achievement thing or not. Because if you are, then you also need to factor in some time to work on those things that you say are important to you.
Do the important stuff first. And I consider eating well, getting enough sleep, spending time with the family, good grooming and exercise all to be essential not just important.
Why? Well when i "feel" good i am able to do more. So please remember to factor in those kinds of things that make you feel good into your plan too.
With Many thoughts,
