Going and going and going and going and...

I have a confession to make, I have been accused of being like the "insert battery brand" bunny. I am forever on the go, and feel guilty when I stop.

Which is ironic given that when I do stop it's usually because it is forced on me...usually through illness.

I have had a week of coughs and colds, and it's been an absolute horror. the first couple of days, I was in denial, nope it's not going to happen to me, I'll carry on regardless, too much to do.

Today I actually stopped and unsurprisingly my body said "thank the goddess for that" and I slept for a couple of hours this afternoon...the cat thought it was wonderful and curled up on my lap and was happily snoring within seconds.

Before I stopped the only good thing I decided about having a cold (as far as I could tell) was that I now sound like Joss Stone....

But after an afternoon of doing absolutely nothing, I came to the sad conclusion, that I need to find better balance. I have said many times that I have trouble switchiing off the thoughts that run around my head, well this afternoon I didn't have ANY. They'd finally gone to sleep too.

So what am I advocating?

Well, if I need to find better balance, then something tells me that we all need to. Work when you are at work. Plan the next day and then just as importantly, decide what you are NOT going to do. You don't need to do it all today, so I am going to watch a movie later. The book can wait.

And then once you have decided what you are going to do, by all means get on and do it. But once you have completed those items, stop and re-assess where you are. And rest, recover for the next phase.

I lift weights as part of my exercise programme, and muscles are a good way of describing what this is like. Your muscles become fatigued when you are pushing weights. And sooner rather than later, they will run out of capability - you won't physically be able to push another weight....believe me, it's true. But if you wait a while, the muscle recovers and you can do another set or repetition of the same muscle groups. However, you won't be able to push the same amount of weight for the same amount of time on the second set. The muscle tires more quickly.

So please remember what I had forgotten - you get tired if you keep on going and going and going and .... it takes a damn sight longer to recover when you do. Therefore balance is vital.
