Living your dream one day at a time

Yesterday we spoke about those bad decisions that we make - some of which we aren't aware of. Today I want to speak to you about how to make some better decisions to the way your life turns out.

As regular readers of DDOMM are aware - it is a good idea to have some sort of idea where you want to get to. And like any road trip we embark on we need to know where the pit stops are going to be. However, if you don't know what your ultimate destination is, then any road will do, after all they do get you to somewhere.

Planning any kind of trip or holiday is easy though. We know where we want to get to and we plan our journey's based on some simple criteria. Usually where, when, how long for, what cost and who with. Then there are some things on our lists - those things we say we want, but have no idea of the starting point, let alone the end result. Those are vague, wishy, washy maybe one day if everything is alright, might happen. So we won't deal with those at the moment. I'm not saying we won't get around to them, but we need to work on those things that you KNOW you want.

For example:
You want a new car, a new house, a new piece of furniture. Now depending on the cost of the said item - it could take you a few months to save up for it, or it could take you years. So are there other ways you can realise your money sooner? Whilst you could get a second job, or rob a bank, have you considered using what you already have in a different way? The way my finances used to be structured meant that I was working for my money and there never seemed to be enough to do EVERYTHING i wanted to do. But talking to some financial planners, they have the know how to make my money work for me and consequently have assisted me to realise a couple of my early monetary goals. I had lots of questions, but did not know where to start to answer them. The financial planners did, and now those goals are progressing.

So the first thing you need to do is know what you want answers to. Once you have those questions worked out, you will find answers being presented to you. It sounds bizarre, but it's true. If your questions are vague then so will the answers be.

So - you want a house, a car a piece of furniture. We know we need to speak to some one with regards to the money we think we want. Now the next set of questions has to be - what kind of car? What kind of house? Where do you want to live? Would it make more sense to wait to buy the new lounge suite until you know the size of the rooms of the house, or do you have the layout worked out? Because once you start to visualise the rooms that you want, and what you want to have in them, you can start planning to acquire those pieces of furniture that you need. You will begin to see examples of the kinds of house that you want, and you will definitely know how much money you are going to need to buy it.

So as you are working on realising your house and car dreams, you will begin to see changes to the rest of your life also. If you have a house you need to sell, then you will begin to find time to clean and decorate the rooms. Hint, neutral colours work well if you are planning on selling. You will make the curtains and the cushions, you will weed the garden and spend time and energy on making the house stand out from the competition so that you can get a better price for it on the market.

And you may come to realise that you need to get another job, one that pays you a little more money so that you can get the deposit faster. So you spend time one evening and update your CV. And when you start to remember all those things that you have achieved since starting your present job, you will remember how good it felt to achieve those things that you did. How good it felt to be promoted, how good it felt to get the job in the first place. You will remember how much time and effort you put into your appearance on a daily basis. And then when you are cleaning out your closets you begin to find those beautiful suits you used to wear. And now with all the extra cleaning, tidying and gardening you've been doing - those suits actually fit now.

As you may have realised by now. Everything impacts on every thing else. If you don't feel good then chances are going to be excellent that your performance is good to reflect that. So the question has to be which comes first, feeling good about who we are, or doing things that make us feel good about ourselves. One thing I do know is this - as you do more, you will always find time to do more.

Work out what you want, spend some time and ask yourself some hard questions. Once you have those questions worked out, you will begin to find some answers.

Tomorrow we will look in more depth at those wishy washy vague goals, and how you can turn them into something concrete.

With many thoughts
Elle
