Motivation Kids Style

Imagine my son's delight when I said he could help paint the spare room tonight. He was given the rather boring task of edging all the doors, seams and floor. Given that a brush is slightly less "damaging" than a roller, I decided to play it safe and see what his motivation was like.

To my surprise he finished first and was bemoaning the fact that he didn't have anything else to paint. So I said, actually there's all those walls you can draw on.

And we managed to complete the undercoating of two walls, plus the seaming in the time it took dinner to cook.

It's amazing what you can achieve:

When you want to do something
When you know what you want to do and achieve
When you have willing and motivated helpers
When you're having fun at the same time

When you fire yourself up with enthusiasm, lots of things happen. People will help - in this case, my kids removed carpets and vacuumed debris - because it was fun to do. My son was allowed to paint, because he was allowed to be messy, he had the best fun when painting the picture of his sister (who wasn't very impressed with his artistic impressions by the way), and we captured the moment - we can relive the fun and the laughter.

Lots happening at the moment - which I won't bore you with, but there are some things in my life at the moment that are not exactly smooth sailing. I've done what I can, and am now leaving the next steps to those people who need to do theirs. So instead of worrying, which I can be prone to do, I got busy. And if you have followed my suggestions from previous editions, you know it can be almost imposible to worry and be busy at the same time. So get involved with something you have control over, and do it.

When you inspire others to do something, you raise your own levels. When you have assistance from people who are willing and motivated to do their bit, things will get done much quicker. I'm very fortunate that my kids (now they have become teenagers) are still willing to help me. But that's probably because they know they're going to have fun doing it.

By the time dinner was ready, brushes and hands washed - the stress and tiredness had bled off and I was then able to get back into writing mode. Something I know I would not have been able to do had I turned on the computer as soon as I had gotten home.

When you feel stuck in one area of your life, don't throw up your hands in despair and do nothing. Change tack completely and you can move forwards in others.
