One day I will...

You know - one day I'm going to........................ (please fill in the blank).

What's wrong with this statement is that most of us live our lives saying that to ourselves and everyone we speak to. They know as well as we do that nothing will ever come of these vague statements, so they nod politely and you feel "good" because they have just validated your "goal".

So the first thing is to stop yourself using those words. Easier said than done? Well like everything it takes time and practice. But it is possible - if you want to do it.

Remember that goal list you have? Well fish it out for me just for a minute and have a good look at the items listed on the sheet.

Now, looking at those goal items, the biggest test whether you will achieve these things or not is your desire to have, do, be or own whatever it is. If you can't summon up the energy to get enthusiastic about it, then you will not be willing to spend any energy to accomplish it.

So how do you rate your desire for those items? Now before you say, but they're on my list, so of course I want them. Well my question to you is what are you doing today in order to get that item? What did you do yesterday? What are you planning on doing tomorrow to realise that item?

You see, desire means you will do WHATEVER it takes to get it. You know exactly what i mean. Think back to a time when you were absolutely determined to get something, and nothing was going to get in your way? That's the kind of desire I'm talking about. If you can't get that enthusiastic about those "goals" on your list, then they're vague, wishy, washy - never will be accomplished items.

Of course you can also get completely excited about the wrong kinds of things. So before you rush headlong into doing something, there is a second set of questions you need to ask yourself. And they are:
What reasons do you have?

If you don't have concrete reasons as to why you want something, then again, you will not do the work that you will need to do in order to accomplish them.

If you truly want to get on in life you need to stop dealing in - one day i'll....

And finally I need you to tell yourself, what having, doing or being that item will give to you. It could be better self esteem, a better lifestyle or whatever it is you say you want. And then once you have that worked out you will begin to live in the way that means you will get what you want.

Start making some decisions as to what you really want, work out your reasons, and then you will know instinctively whether or not your desire is strong enough to get you over the line.
