Reading is not doing
Reading may be the first step, especially if you know absolutely NOTHING about the subject. But something tells me, you know SOMETHING about everything that you say you want, want to do, be or achieve.
Don't believe me? Well take an assignment you've been given, or a book you want to write, or a report that needs to be written.
You always write about what you know.
You fill in the details if you need to afterwards.
Can you imagine deciding to write a book on the inter-relationship of the honey bee in outer mongolia, you'd need to do some serious research to undertake that particular project. But chances are going to be good that you are not going to be asked to write that particular topic - ever.
So, if you think you suffer from writer's block, this is a good technique to try....
Take the keywords from the title of the book, project, assignment you've been given and then answer the following questions:
What do they want to know
Who wants to know about it
When do they need the answers by
Where does this take place
Why do they need to know this information
Of course the answers will depend on the piece you've been asked to write. A fictional novel will have a different set of criteria than a report on the outcomes of the board meeting of x,y,z company....but then again maybe not.
Each of your keywords will help you to answer the questions
Or take any other project - say for example you want to get fit and healthy. Where do you start? Actually you start with a good look in the mirror, followed by the fridge, the pantry and the cupboard. Then you start to write down what it is you consume each and every day. It's not rocket science, the problem is we're like 6 year old kids when it comes to feeding ourselves, we are swayed by packaging and advertising.
Once you have that information, you can then start to read the labels of the food stuffs you consume, total up the amount of kilojoules that comprise your current "diet" and you will see where you need to make adjustments. So far we have not looked at a "diet" book, and to be honest, in the main - we don't need to. We know that if we eat too much and don't exercise we'll put weight on. Simple equation. How much should you be eating? Well that depends on your Body Mass Index, Your height and weight. The book I would recommend is a calorie counter book - we have Alan Borushek's book in Australia - you'll find it at newsagents rather than a bookshop. He has a section at the front that tells you how many kilojoules you should be consuming for your height/ideal weight/size.
Then all you need to do is adjust your intake of food accordingly. No diet books to read or buy for that matter. No more reasons to procrastinate...i'll just start the diet when i've finished the book / ate the entire contents of the fridge /
And to gain more kilojoule's you add some exercise to your daily routine and you start to tone the body at the same time.....what kind of exercise...well any - walking is a good start. Depending on your level of fitness you may not be able to jog, but you can clean, you can garden, you can decorate and play with the kids. It's all exercise and it all adds up. Oh and one other thing, you won't notice your stomach is rumbling if you're busy !!
So, read by all means, but don't use it as an excuse for not doing.
With many thoughts
