The conversation

For the regular readers of the daily dose you will know that I advocate the use of what I call a "brain dump" a chance to get those things that are running around inside your head onto paper. Once you've done that, you can then concentrate on what is really important. If you've never done a morning brain dump, consider this - if you are constantly going over and over something, you are giving it energy and importance in your life only some of which may be of relevance to you as you go about your day.

Get yourself a notebook and then before you do anything else write down your thoughts. Yes it is different from journaling as this is done at the end of each day / week or whenever you write your journals. I do both. Once you have dumped the contents of your mind onto your pages, close the book and get on with your day. You can review them in a couple of weeks.

Why is it important to review them after a couple of weeks? Well a germ of an idea may appear to you caught up in the clutter. If that idea percolates through several days of writing you know it is something you need to pay attention to. Transfer this item to your ideas list/ goal list for consideration. It may show you that you that you need to move house, jobs, change careers entirely...yes these daily ramblings can be that profound. Which leads me into today's edition of the Daily Dose. What follows is a "conversation" I had at the beginning of May 2007.... which I thought i would transcribe and share with you.

---------------------------------

"I have a bit of time before I head off to start my day so I thought I would check in with you to see how you are doing?"

"That's nice"

"So how are you?"

"Who me?"

"Yes you, hiding behind those masks and layers you hide behind! You, the real you?"

"Well I find it's so much easier not to show my face, so much easier to hide than expose the 'real me' and then be ridiculed."

"How do you know you'll be ridiculed?"

"Well it's happened many times?"

"By whom?"

"I'd rather not say"

"Afraid to tell me?"

"Something like that"

"well unless you are willing to face the fact that they may not be riduculing you at all"

"Of course they are"

"Are you sure? They may just be scared."

"Oh, I hadn't thought of it like that before."

"So - how are you?"

"You asked me that before. I need new slippers."

"Stop changing the subject"

"I'm not"

"yes you are"

"I suppose, but you've challenged one of my major reasons for hiding and now that I'm having my doubts, it's harder to be afraid."

"And isn't that the point? We worry about so many things, few of which actually come true, that it's not funny."

"Yes it is interesting isn't it, when you are so sure of something, it's easy to move forwards. It feels like you could take to the air and fly to the moon and get it."

"So why don't you?"

"What fly?"

"Come out of hiding and go for what you really want"

"But I'm not sure what I really want."

"And therein lies another major problem. If you don't know EXACTLY what you want, how are you ever going to get anything?"

"OH"

"Imagine standing at a crossroads, every road has a potential destination, but you can't see far enough down the road, and you can't choose because from this distance the signs are a bit blurry"

"Blurry !! sounds like I need new glasses"

"Yes that's it, you do. Don't you see, that without clear vision you will never "see" and you will probably end up somewhere, but you're really not sure where."

"Having vague goals is like that cross roads then?"

"Yes it is, that's exactly what having blurred vision is like. So what happens, you wander off down the first road, and it may be the one you're after, but it may not. So you head back to the cross roads to take another look, but when you get there, you are faced with the same problem. Go back, go somewhere else, or do you set up camp and wait for someone to point you in the right direction."

"well that might not be a bad idea"

"What happens if no-one comes alone, you could be waiting an awfully long time"

"So what can I do?"

"Decide what road you are going to take, by that I mean - decide what goal you want to achieve"

"That's it"

"Yes it is as easy as that. Once you know what you want, you will know exactly what road to take."

"You make it sound so simple"

"That's because it is"

"OK"

"OK?"

"Yes, OK"

"so what are you going to do now?"

"I'm going to buy some glasses. Do you know any good optometrists?"

"You'll see more if you look inside?"

"Now you're confusing me. I thought you said I needed to know what goal i wanted to achieve."

"And so I did. But unless you know where to start"

"Oh, and I find that out from looking inside?"

"Remember those things you used to want to be "when you grew up?"

"Yes"

"Well that's the first place to look"

"Is there a second place?"

"What you do in your spare time is a good indication of what you should be doing full time"

"what cleaning the house?"

"no silly, after you've done all those chores, what would you do more than anything else in the entire world - if you had a spare five minutes."

"Oh"

"Yes Oh, that's what I mean"

"Well that makes it easier then, thanks"

"You're welcome, call me anytime you need to talk."

"Thanks I will"
