Through the barrier

This is my personal diary, blog, journal or whatever else you want to call it. As a reforming procrastinator it is easy to slip back into old habits and patterns of behaviour. For those fellow sufferers out there, you will know what I mean. This is my journey through the barrier to better things, Elle.

I thought the end had arrived

Your life can change in an instant. Case in point this morning.

Driving to work this morning, watching the road - doing 70 in a 70 designated zone. Car in the left hand lane in front wants to turn left, i check my mirrors, nothing in the immediate right hand lane, a truck abiout 30 meters away so i indicate and move right....next thing i see is a woman in a big family saloon scream out of the left hand turn and into the road...cutting off the guy wanting to turn left - and into my way.....I lost about 6 of my 7 lives and about a years worth of rubber and brakes....the guy in the truck nearly jackknifed as i had to slam the brakes on to avoid the woman who couldn't see what was in front of her and couldn't be bothered to wait.

And of course, the usual thougths run through your brain. I left dishes in the sink - what will people think when they arrive to clean out the house? I didn't complete the books I am writing - no legacy to leave my children....lots of photos, but something truly achieved? What about my kids and my partner... I didn't have chance to say goodbye. Always running at a million miles an hour, trying to get everything done....except the really important "stuff".

Today I shall re-evaluate my goal list - again.

Today I shall decide what I am NOT going to do.

Today I shall focus on the important and not just the urgent, busy work.

What about you?

Energy exchanges

Last night we were very fortunate to listen to the entire Elton John concert being held at the members equity stadium in East Perth. The home of Perth Glory. A friend has a place close by, and with the doors and windows open, we were so lucky to be able to hear one of the best concerts so far this year.

Why make that bold statement? Was it because we didn't have to pay? No - would have gladly paid to be part of the crowd. No it was far simpler than that. Elton John was simply on fire. The energy, the passion, the pure unadulterated excitement he put into his performance left the crowd and the air around us vibrating.

As an artist we put so much of ourselves into what we do. When it is so easy to go through the motions, of doing only that which we have to do, as opposed to everything that we can do. The buzz from last night is still with me, it has given today such a deeper feeling for me. Now I know what I should be doing - ALL the time. That's the absolute joy in being a writer, capturing the emotions and the energy exchanges and sharing them with you.

Get excited with life and by life. Make today the day when you make that promise to yourself that you will be true to who you are and not go through the motions. Go on you owe it to yourself and the people who you share energy with.

How dedicated are you?

In my continuing bid to "get fit" I am in the process of challenging my mind and body - again. As you know I am learning how to pole dance, which is challenging enough one might say, but on Saturday I went to a flexibility class at the studio. Why? Well my personal philosophy is "because I can".

I have to say my body complained at the intensity of the stretching - but a hot bath later that same day did ease out the pain in my lower back....and I have already booked a spot for next saturday's class. The intermediates class starts this Wednesday - so shall be ready to stretch out the muscles again by then.

Anyway, I was watching the final of the program "so you think you can dance" last night. Not only do these people have awesome talent, but the dedication to their "sport" their art and their craft was evident. In learning the routines, the hours they must spend practicing and honing their skills....and of course performing. Which of course made me think about motivateme and my readers of the daily dose of motivational medicine....and of course my own personal journey. When you know what you want, and you want it so badly you will do whatever you need to do. You will spend half the night working out the answer to a problem. You will get up early to start again. You will put in the hours and days to practice, practice, practice, so that when you come to "perform" you know what you are doing and you are going to do it well.

Dedication, persistence and a clear objective...once you have those three aspects worked out, you will achieve your personal goals.....guaranteed.

Staying focused

Mid week, but only one more day to go before a long weekend - Anzac day on Friday. So as usual you have 5 days work to fit into 4. How do you stay focused and do those things that matter?

For me it is a case of - knowing what is important. What needs to be done, as opposed to what I would like to do, and no sometimes they are not the same. It is also a case of planning, good time management and saying no to doing those things that do not take me towards my goals. I know that can be easier said than done, but once you have mastered the art of saying no, it can be quite liberating. But don't say no if you are simply trying to shirk your duties, that's not fair on the ones who have to pick up after you. But if the item doesn't need doing, let alone done by you - then it is time to toss the item into the bin.

So what don't you need to do?

Surfing the internet, answering emails that don't need to be answered, calling endless meetings, chatting to friends and colleagues on the telephone and in person. These "things" may not seem like much, but believe me they can add up to hours each week.

So, turn off the net, answer emails once or twice a day and walk with purpose that way you are unlikely to be stopped by other people looking to waste their time as well as yours and you will get a lot more done.

Knowledge vs. Information

There was an interesting question on the daily dose of motivational medicine forum - can you "read" knowledge. Personally I don't think so. But if you would like to join in the debate - please go to  - daily dose ezine pages - make time to read
