Multi tasking vs. concentration on one job at at time

This isn't about women who can multi-task and men who have blinkered vision when it comes to goal setting and goal achievement. Rather, does it matter which way you choose to work?

The answer is of course, they both work and they both have problems associated with them. So we'll deal with the positives of both methods first.

Multi-tasking means that:

  • You can move more than one project forward at any one time
  • Projects that stall for one reason or another (usually because you are waiting on something or someone) means that you can carry on with your other tasks without standing around twiddling your thumbs.
  • You can fit minor tasks around major ones

One project focus:

  • Your projects get completed far faster if you focus your attention on them
  • Your concentration isn't broken by other things

The downsides of multi-tasking are:

  • Too many things try and compete for your time and energy
  • Projects don't get completed quite so quickly
  • Your attention can be swayed by other things that come up

The downsides of one project focus:

  • If you are relying on other people to assist you, you will be waiting for them to do their bit before you can complete yours. Depending on the person(s) you are waiting for will determine the amount of stress this places on you.
  • Other projects do not get started, let alone completed, so deciding which one to work on can be a problem and you may end up not doing any of them.

So, both work and both have problems associated with them. As with all things in life, do what works for you. There is not a one size fits all strategy when it comes to goal setting and goal achievement.
